Technical Reference: Designing Reliable Clean Energy Storage
Properly sizing a sustainable off-grid electrical system requires accounting for thermodynamic heat losses, inverter conversion efficiency, and battery life degradation curves.
1. Inverter Derate Penalty
Direct current (DC) loads run natively from your 12V or 24V bus without parasitic draw. Alternating current (AC) appliances require pure sine wave inversion, which introduces an 8% to 15% thermal efficiency loss that must be added to your daily load calculations.
2. Battery Depth of Discharge (DoD)
Discharging traditional lead-acid or AGM batteries below 50% state-of-charge causes irreversible plate sulfation and early failure. Modern LiFePO4 cells support 85% to 90% depth of discharge with over 3,500 continuous full cycles.
3. Peak Sun Hours (PSH)
Peak Sun Hours measure standard solar irradiance at 1,000 W/m² rather than raw daylight hours. A typical 10-hour sunny summer day generates between 4.0 and 5.5 PSH depending on latitude, atmospheric haze, and panel angle.
